Voice powered applications with Grails (Screencast)

Posted on April 20, 2011 by mpermar

Grails Logo Hi. In a previous post we announced our new and shiny Grails Webapi library that allows all Grails developers to create voice and SMS powered applications very easily from their Grails applications.

If you go to the plugin’s web page at Grails.org you will find that there is already quite a few documentation out there. But I thought it would be quite useful to publish a screencast showing step by step how to create applications. This can be very interesting specially for developers that are not used to the Grails platform.

So here it is. It is a very short 15 minutes video in which I’ll show you how quick and easy you can create voice applications in Grails. I really hope you like it.

  1. I’ve watched the screen cast, and then read the spec on grails.org. There’s a number of mistakes in the documentation itself, mostly typos and missing pieces, but one is critical: the “on(event: ‘success’, next..)” thing does not belong inside of ask() but outside of it.

If one would try to use it only with the docs then it is very frustrating… Can you fix that?

Also make sure your examples don’t span outside the boxes as it looks awful and make sure if you provide a piece of code for copy-pasting then make sure they are complete (missing } all over the place, missing imports,….)

Otherwise great stuff! I’ve already one app that’s going to use it!

    Hi Matthias,

Thanks for the feedback. You are right that was an important mistake. Thanks for pointing it out. It should be fixed now.

And yes, you’re absolutely right. Some missing pieces. That’s because otherwise each sample would have been too large and I wanted to use the grails plugin page as a showcase for all the cool things you can do with Tropo and not to become an users manual. If anyone wants to copy and paste code he or she should go to the actual TropoBuilderTest case that contains all the full code snippets (https://github.com/tropo/tropo-webapi-grails/blob/master/test/unit/com/tropo/grails/TropoBuilderTests.groovy)so anyone interested should still have a look to the tests.

Hopefully on the next Tropo 2 release we will have a proper manual on the actual Tropo’s webpage and at the same time I will keep creating some samples and publishing the stuff on the blog.

Feel free to point out any other bugs, typos, or to raise pull requests on GitHub on any issue you find out. We will be very glad to help.

    Cheers.
