Tropo Customer Spotlight: Babelverse

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

Babelverse founders Mayel de Borniol and Josef Dunne were working out of the Tropo HQ office in San Francisco when they received the call that they had been accepted to compete among 15 other startups in the Le Web 2011 Startup Competition.

With over 600 applicants and only two weeks to prepare for the competition in Paris, France, we were able to sit down with them over a few beers and discuss their game plan to win, their experience in the San Francisco and Silicon Valley for the first time, being a part of the  Start-Up Chile Program and how they used Tropo for Crisis Response to help victims of the Japan Earthquake in March 2011.

Our Babelverse boys won 3rd place in the Le Web 2011 Startup Competition and we couldn’t be more proud.  Clearly their motto of including alcoholic beverages to help their inspiration and creativity along with their faith in always somehow being in the right place at the right time helped them win in Paris.  Congratulations!

Help build a smarter San Francisco at CityCampSF Hackathon

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

CityCamp is an unconference focused on innovation for municipal governments and community organizations. As an unconference, content for CityCamp is not programmed for a passive audience. Instead, content is created and organized by participants and coordinated by facilitators. Participants are expected to play active roles in sessions. This provides an excellent format for creative, open exchange geared toward action.

This weekend in San Francisco, Tropo is sponsoring the CityCampSF Hackathon.   From 12pm Saturday Dec 10 until 12pm Sunday December 11th, civic-minded coders will be working together to make new tools, apps, and data available to make San Francisco better.

Drop2Drink wins Random Hacks of Kindness San Fran

Monday, December 5th, 2011

What a weekend!   Tropo sponsored Random Hacks of Kindness events in 4 different cities.  We’re still resting up from the craziness, but I wanted to do a quick post about the winning project in San Francisco.

Last summer I was attending Summer of Smart at GAFFTA and I met Sarah Filley, who told me about an idea she had for an earthquake preparedness project centered around awareness.  Turns out that there are 62 fire hydrants spread out around San Francisco specifically designated for emergency drinking water in the event of a major quake.  The most publicly available source of this info was a “blurry PDF file downloadable from a city website” or visibly by a blue “drop” painted on each of the hydrants.  Sarah wanted to increase the visibility of these sources of emergency drinking water.

I thought this would make for a great project for Random Hacks of Kindness so I encouraged Sarah to present her project on Friday night.   By Saturday afternoon Sarah’s excellent team of hackers had an interactive Google Map set up.  By Sunday, they had full interactive QR-codes, text messaging (powered by Tropo), Four Square checkins… no longer were these 62 hydrants virtually invisible!

Thanks to the RHoK sponsors:  Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, NASA, HP and the World Bank!   More on the other RHoK locations soon…

Tropo sponsors @GWOBorg #GameSave Exhibition in San Francisco

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

We’re happy to announce that Tropo is sponsoring the first ever GameSave Exhibition in San Francisco on Friday, July 15th. GameSave was born out of a partnership between Geeks without Bounds and Gameranx in an effort to challenge developers to design games that help us better mitigate disasters and crises.

The initial 5-week long GameSave hackathon has been featured in numerous articles and posts including Jared Keller’s article in The Atlantic entitled “This Game Could Save Your Life“, Cory Doctorow’s GameSave post on Boing Boing and even a hat tip by FEMA director Craig Fugate on his twitter stream.

As the first phase of GameSave hacks come to a close, the organizers decided to throw a party to celebrate and exhibit the progress of the games being built.  There will be drinks, live music and performances starting at 7pm in San Francisco at the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts.  Tropo was happy to step in and sponsor the party to make it accessible for anyone who wants to attend!  All you have to do is register at http://gamesave.eventbrite.com, choose the $30 ticket and enter the discount code ihearttropo

Tropo Sponsors the Summer of Smart

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Tropo is thrilled to be sponsoring the Summer of Smart program in the City of San Francisco.

Summer of Smart

“Sumer of Smart” is a three month long series of events and discussions centered around urban innovation – it will bring together people from many different disciplines to work on strategies and applications to benefit those that live in, work in and visit the City of San Francisco.

This series of events began recently with a forum bringing together Mayoral candidates in San Francisco at the Pier 38 offices of Automattic, followed by CityCamp San Francisco. We were delighted to be a part of these events, and are just as excited to help support the Summer of Smart.

Our primary interest is – not surprisingly – hacking and app building! Our platforms and APIs are ideal for building things that can make urban environments easier to navigate, to live in and to visit.

A great example of the awesome apps that you can build with Tropo can be seen by looking at the results of the recently concluded Applications for Good competition – one of the winners (SNAPFresh) was built using the Tropo platform.

This innovative and very useful application lets anyone quickly and easily find the location of retailers that accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistace Program (SNAP) cards in the Bay Area by sending a text message.

It is these kinds of innovative applications we hope to foster by sponsoring the Summer of Smart.

If you are interested in attending one of te Summer of Smart events, you can head on over to their site and find one that matches your interest. You can also submit ideas for Summer of Smart on the website, or by tweeting with the hashtag #SoSIdeas.

We can’t wait to see all of the great ideas and new applications that come out of this summer-log series of events!
